Dede was born at Madrid Zoo on September 7, 2010, with his younger twin brother Abao. The brothers were the first giant panda twins born outside China through artificial insemination alone during China’s long-term international giant panda breeding cooperation. Dede’s name was chosen by public vote and came from an affectionate way of referring to Madrid, preserving the city of his birth in his name. In 2013, he returned to Chengdu with Abao.
