Hangbao's name is directly linked to China's space program. She was born on June 23, 2020, at Shenshuping Base in Wolong, the same day China launched the final BeiDou-3 satellite for its global navigation network. In 2021, she officially received the name “Hangbao” through a public naming campaign. Keepers have said that she grew up with her mother in a semi-wild environment, was lively and active from an early age, and retained more wild behavior than pandas raised in a typical captive setting.
