Laolaolao was born at Beijing Zoo on September 8, 1986. She was a second-generation giant panda successfully bred through artificial insemination and later became Yaya's mother. After giving birth to twins in 1998, the Beijing Zoo team used assisted rotation so that she nursed one cub at a time, keeping both cubs alive through 129 consecutive days of hand-assisted care—an important record in the zoo's twin-rearing work of the 1990s.
