Xin Xin’s family story traces back to the 1975 gift of giant pandas from China to Mexico. Her mother, Tohui, was the offspring of Ying Ying and Pe Pe, who bred in Mexico, and Xin Xin was born at Chapultepec Zoo in 1990. China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration described her as, at the time, the only third-generation descendant of giant pandas originally presented as state gifts. Her name means “hope.”
