Baoquan has one particularly recognizable habit: he likes rolling in mud. In 2023, he drew attention because of broken fur that made him appear thin. The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda explained that Ya’an’s humid environment, together with his habit of rolling in the mud, was one factor behind the hair breakage. Veterinary examinations found no skin disease, and his weight, energy levels and appetite were all normal at the time.
