Niuniu is a wild female giant panda living in Foping in the Qinling Mountains and is the mother of Qizai. Genetic research published in 2024 found that both Niuniu and Xiyue have normal black-and-white coats but each carries a heterozygous 25-base-pair deletion in Bace2. Qizai inherited the variant from both parents and displays the rare brown-and-white coat coloration.

Mated in the wild and gave birth to Longbao
Mated successfully with the male giant panda Diandian in the wild in 2012 and gave birth to a male cub, Longbao.

Monitored in the wild in Foping
From September 2013 through May 2014, Niuniu was continuously tracked and sampled in the Sanguanmiao area of Foping National Nature Reserve while wearing a GPS collar.

Confirmed as Qizai’s mother
Genetic research published in 2024 confirmed Niuniu as the biological mother of the brown-and-white giant panda Qizai and found that she carries a Bace2 deletion variant associated with brown-and-white coat coloration.
