His brown-and-white coat makes Qizai one of the most distinctive Qinling giant pandas. In 2009, he was found and rescued in the wild in Foping, Shaanxi. Later genetic research linked Qizai’s brown coat to a 25-base-pair deletion in the Bace2 gene. Qizai later fathered two offspring, Qinhua and Bazai, but both cubs have the standard black-and-white coat.

Qizai was born in the wild in Foping, Shaanxi, in 2009.
Found and rescued in Foping Nature Reserve
Qizai was found and rescued near Paifanggou in Sanguanmiao, Foping National Nature Reserve, Shaanxi, on November 1, 2009.

Brown-coat genetics study was published
On March 5, 2024, a study of brown giant panda coat genetics that used Qizai’s family line as an important research subject was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study found that a 25-base-pair deletion in the first exon of Bace2 was the most likely genetic basis of the brown-and-white coat.
