Xiyue is a wild male giant panda that has long lived in Foping, Shaanxi, and is also known to researchers as “Yimao.” He has been an important subject of long-term field monitoring. Later genetic research confirmed that Xiyue and Niuniu are the parents of Qizai, the brown-and-white giant panda, and that both black-and-white parents carry a Bace2 deletion variant associated with brown-and-white coat coloration.

Monitored in the wild in Foping
From September 2013 through May 2014, Xiyue was continuously tracked and sampled in the Sanguanmiao area of Foping National Nature Reserve while wearing a GPS collar.

Confirmed as Qizai’s father
Genetic research published in 2024 confirmed Xiyue as the biological father of the brown-and-white giant panda Qizai and found that he carries a Bace2 deletion variant associated with brown-and-white coat coloration.
