Tangtang, also known as “No. 21,” was a key female during Wolong’s early efforts to solve the challenges of giant panda cub rearing. After she gave birth to Gongzhu in 1998, she did not care for the cub on her own, so researchers collected her milk and tried assisted hand-rearing. Gongzhu grew up successfully, and the experience became an important step in the development of assisted giant panda cub-rearing techniques at Wolong.
