Wanwan came from the wild in Foping, Shaanxi, and later lived at Xi’an Zoo. From June to September 1987, he and Xixi were exhibited at Antwerp Zoo in Belgium with approval from China’s State Council. Xi’an Zoo also studied his mating behavior from 1986 to 1991, leaving systematic early observations of natural mating in captive giant pandas.

Rescued in Foping and taken to Xi’an Zoo
In January 1975, Wanwan became separated from his mother near Wangou in Sanguanmiao Village, Yueba Township, Foping, Shaanxi. He was rescued and then taken to Xi’an Zoo for human care.

Mated naturally with Dandan
In 1986, Wanwan mated naturally with Dandan. She gave birth to twins that year, but neither survived.

Exhibited at Antwerp Zoo in Belgium
From June 1 to September 28, 1987, Wanwan and Xixi were exhibited at Antwerp Zoo in Belgium before returning to Xi’an Zoo.
Qinqin was born
On August 31, 1989, Dandan gave birth to a male cub, Qinqin, sired by Wanwan.
