In 1983, while still young, Yongyong was rescued in Baoxing, Sichuan. Her rescuer initially named her ‘Yinyin,’ using a homophone of his own surname, but a newspaper later printed the name as ‘Yongyong,’ and that version remained. In 1984, she and Yingxin traveled to Los Angeles for an exhibition during the 23rd Olympic Games, becoming part of a landmark period of China–U.S. giant panda exchange.
