After being rescued from the wild, Caocao spent nearly her entire life connected to giant panda rewilding research. She first raised her son Taotao through a mother-led cub rewilding program, then became the first captive female giant panda to take part in a field breeding trial with a wild male. In 2017, she mated naturally with a wild male and gave birth successfully, showing that field breeding could provide a practical way to promote genetic exchange between captive and wild populations.
