In 2018, Chengjiu developed acute gastric dilatation with a large amount of retained food in his stomach while living at Hangzhou Zoo. Public materials at the time described it as the first such case in the history of captive giant pandas. After a gastrotomy, a blood transfusion, and 61 consecutive days of treatment, he recovered. The case also provided valuable clinical experience for diagnosing and treating this condition.
