Susu was born around 1983 in the wild in Mabian, Sichuan. When she was rescued after being injured in 1986, her right eye was already permanently blind. During an anesthetized examination the following year, she stopped breathing for three and a half hours and remained in shock for 25 hours before being revived. Of the five cubs she produced in three litters, Kobe, Shulan and Meimei survived; through Meimei, who later went to Shirahama in Japan, Susu’s lineage became part of the founding line of the “Hama family.”
