Kebi was born at Chengdu Zoo on July 26, 1992, as the Barcelona Olympics were opening. Then-International Olympic Committee president Samaranch named him “Kebi” after Cobi, the mascot of those Games, giving him a distinctive identity as an “Olympic panda.” Several of his descendants later continued that Olympic connection.
