Xingrong's life included two unusual chapters in conservation research and veterinary care. In 2012, she became one of the first six pandas from Chengdu to enter a transitional rewilding research program at Panda Valley. In 2021, she was diagnosed with dedifferentiated liposarcoma, which the Chengdu Research Base described as the first recorded case of this highly malignant tumor in a captive giant panda worldwide. She underwent tumor resection and hip reconstruction, but the cancer later metastasized, causing multiple organ failure; she died on September 27 that year.
