Born

Tai Shan was the first giant panda cub born at the Smithsonian's National Zoo to survive. Under the original cooperation agreement, he was expected to return to China after turning two, but China approved two extensions that allowed him to remain in Washington for about two and a half more years. Keepers recalled that, as a youngster, Tai Shan closely followed what staff were doing and always seemed to want to know where they were. He returned to China in 2010.
