- Born
Mei Xiang lived in Washington for nearly 23 years, raising four surviving cubs—Tai Shan, Bao Bao, Bei Bei and Xiao Qi Ji—and taking part in long-running China–U.S. giant panda breeding research. In 2020, at age 22, she gave birth to Xiao Qi Ji after artificial insemination using frozen-thawed semen from Tian Tian. She was then the oldest giant panda to give birth in the United States, and the birth marked the first successful giant panda birth at a U.S. zoo using only frozen-thawed semen for artificial insemination.
