In 1996, Jiaozi was adopted and named by the Chengdu Cigarette Factory, becoming the first giant panda in China to be adopted through a social sponsorship program. Her experience as a mother changed markedly over time: after needing human assistance with her first cub because she did not yet know how to care for it, she gradually learned to raise her cubs herself. In 2013, at age 18, she gave birth to a rare set of triplets.
