Miaomiao's name comes from the unusual circumstances surrounding her birth. When she was born on September 4, 2012, she was severely dehydrated; keepers chose the character “Miao,” written with three “water” radicals, to express their hope that she would grow up healthy. Because her mother Jiaozi had no milk, three other panda mothers took turns caring for her, and she grew up being nursed by several mothers.
