Maodou was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on July 26, 2016. The Chengdu Panda Base has long described him as strong-willed and fond of roughhousing with companions. In 2018, Maodou fractured his right femur while active with another panda and underwent surgery. After rehabilitation, he returned to group living with pandas of a similar age. The base has continued to cite the case in its long-term work on the prevention and treatment of orthopedic disease in giant pandas.
