Maotao was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on July 26, 2016. His coat has a noticeably yellow cast, which led the Panda Channel to use the nickname “Yellow Peach” for him. In February 2020, Maotao underwent surgery for an obstruction of the duodenum near the pylorus and recovered successfully. At the time, the Chengdu Panda Base stated that this kind of pyloric or duodenal obstruction had not previously been reported in captive giant pandas in China or abroad.
