Damao was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on September 1, 2008. In 2013, he went to Canada with Ershun and later lived at both the Toronto Zoo and the Calgary Zoo as part of China–Canada giant panda conservation and breeding cooperation. In 2020, difficulties supplying fresh bamboo during the pandemic led Damao and Ershun to end their stay in Canada early and return to China. Chengdu sources later continued to describe Damao as gentle, quiet and unhurried.
