Youyou's mother, Yingying, came from the wild in Sichuan, while her father, Linnan, came from Baishuijiang in Gansu, giving her a distinctive cross-regional family background. On July 23, 2009, she gave birth in Wolong to a cub conceived through artificial insemination with frozen semen, then the world's first giant panda cub successfully born using that technique. The success added a new tool for the genetic management of the captive population.
