The nickname “Taiyang,” meaning “Sun,” has been associated with Yingmei since early in life. When the State Forestry Administration published information on candidate giant pandas for Taiwan in 2005, Yingmei—a female born on August 17, 2003—was described as strong-willed, agile and fond of climbing trees, and as often using a physical advantage to get to food first. Beginning in 2011, Yingmei also spent a full seven years at Zhuyuwan Zoo in Yangzhou.
