In 2003, the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda launched research on reintroducing captive giant pandas into the wild, and Xiangxiang became the first panda to undergo independent wild-training. He was released into the forests of Wolong in April 2006. Less than a year later, he died from injuries sustained while competing with wild giant pandas for territory and food. Researchers later reviewed the failed release and went on to develop new training approaches, including the “mother with cub” method.
