Pengpeng underwent cataract surgery in 2011, but his vision did not recover well. Because of his poor eyesight, he then lived for an extended period in a relatively quiet enclosure where he could be closely monitored. In 2017, he died from encephalitis complicated by seizures, and the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda later invited relevant experts to continue pathological research.
