Zhizhi was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on August 23, 2009. In 2012, she became one of the first giant pandas to enter Panda Valley for transitional rewilding training; at the time, the base described her as active and fond of climbing. As a youngster, she also had a ring of dark markings around her mouth that looked as though she had just eaten black sesame paste, earning her the affectionate nickname “Zhizhi Meir.”
