Xiaoyou was also called Huoyan by her keepers. She was born with only four toes on each hind paw and needed long-term assistance with nursing early in life. After she was about eight months old, her mother Yiran entered estrus again and the staff looked for a foster mother for her; her aunt Xiuqiu eventually took over her care. Her unusual upbringing also became a notable example of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda’s individualized approach to cub care.
