In 2013, Caiyun and Fuhu moved to Jinan Zoo, where local residents later gave them the public nicknames Ding Ding and Dong Dong. Caiyun also used the internal call sign Chuanyun. In 2017, she returned to Sichuan to join the national program for optimizing breeding pairings among captive giant pandas.

Caiyun was born at Bifengxia Panda Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda on July 27, 2010, with her twin brother Chaoyang.
