Zhongzhong and his older twin brother Shuangshuang were born at Chongqing Zoo on June 23, 2019, to their mother Lanxiang. That same day, Mangzai also gave birth to twin daughters. The four cubs were later named Shuangshuang, Zhongzhong, Xixi and Qingqing; together, their names form a phrase meaning “double joy and celebration.” It was the first time in nearly 60 years of giant panda breeding at Chongqing Zoo that two pandas had given birth to twins on the same day.
