In 2003, after Gao Gao arrived in San Diego, he and Bai Yun mated naturally, marking the zoo’s first successful natural mating. Their male cub, Mei Sheng, was born later that year. His birth marked an important step in San Diego’s giant panda breeding program, from artificial insemination to successful natural breeding. Keepers also remembered Mei Sheng as a cub who stayed closer to his mother than his older sister Hua Mei did, while still showing a mischievous side—he liked hanging upside down from tree branches and swinging.
