Born

Hua Mei’s birth was itself a major milestone in China–U.S. giant panda cooperation. Born through artificial insemination at the San Diego Zoo on August 21, 1999, she became the first giant panda born in the United States to survive into adulthood. After returning to China in 2004, she also became the first giant panda born overseas to return to China. Hua Mei later raised numerous cubs of her own, carrying this cross-border conservation story into a new generation.
