In 2021, he climbed over the wall of an outdoor enclosure at Beijing Zoo and entered a back-of-house buffer area; the zoo later modified the enclosure, making the episode a representative example of his climbing ability and active nature. Meng Lan was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on July 4, 2015, and returned to Beijing Zoo in 2017.
