Qizhen's name comes from a dramatic episode at her birth. On September 4, 1999, her first-time mother Meimei accidentally injured the newborn Qizhen's chest. Staff treated her promptly and closed the wound with seven stitches; the name “Qizhen” was chosen as a play on the Chinese words for “seven stitches.” She was born in the same litter as her younger twin sister Qiyuan.
