Lulu was born in the wild in Lushan, Sichuan, in 1999 and was rescued as a cub; he was named after his home county. As an adult, he became an important breeding male at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and fathered more than 50 offspring, including Ying Ying, one of the giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong.

Rescued in Lushan and entered care
Lulu was rescued in the wild in Lushan County, Ya’an, Sichuan, in 1999 and was placed in the care of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda later that year.

Frozen-semen insemination led to a world-first birth
On March 20, 2009, the center artificially inseminated Youyou with Lulu’s frozen semen. On July 23, Youyou gave birth to a cub, the world’s first giant panda born through artificial insemination using frozen semen.
Moved to Shenshuping Base
Lulu was transferred to the Shenshuping Base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda on May 25, 2017.

Died after intestinal perforation
Lulu died at 11:15 a.m. on April 4, 2025, after an intestinal perforation led to severe abdominal infection and multiple organ failure.
