Aoyun was born on August 8, 2008, the day the Beijing Olympic Games opened, and was named for the occasion. Raised by keepers from an early age, Aoyun grew up lively and comfortable around people. Aoyun later took part in the giant panda exhibition held in Shanghai during the 2010 World Expo.

On January 5, 2010, Aoyun left Ya’an for Shanghai as one of the “Expo pandas.” Aoyun was exhibited at Shanghai Zoo during the first half of the year and at Shanghai Wild Animal Park during the second half.
