Sheng Yi was born at the National Zoo of Malaysia on May 31, 2021, the third female cub born there to Xing Xing and Liang Liang. Her birthday coincided with the 47th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. In 2022, the two countries agreed on the name Sheng Yi: “Sheng” conveys the idea of raising or advancing, while “Yi” means friendship, expressing the hope that ties between the two countries would continue to grow.

After 15 years in Australia, the pair returned to China together in 2024, making that long overseas stay a defining part of Wang Wang’s story.
